Local SEO

Local SEO for small businesses in Lebanon: a practical checklist

Local SEO means making it easy for people nearby to find you when they search. This checklist covers what a shop owner can do without an agency, in the order that matters most.

Published 7 min read

Google says it ranks local results on three things: relevance (how well your listing matches the search), distance (how far you are from the person searching) and prominence (how well known your business is). You cannot move your shop closer to every customer, and Google states there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. What you can do is make your information complete, accurate and consistent everywhere. Work through the list below and tick each item off.

Use the same name, address and phone everywhere

Marketers call this NAP: name, address, phone. Search engines and customers compare what they find on Google, Instagram, Facebook, directories and your website. When one place says “Salon Rita, Jal el Dib” and another says “Rita Beauty Center, Antelias” with a different number, both people and machines start to doubt which is right. Write one master version and copy it everywhere.

A master version for a hypothetical salon
Name: Salon Rita. Area: Jal el Dib, Metn. Street: main road, facing the old cinema. Building: Nakhle Building, ground floor. Phone and WhatsApp: +961 3 XXX XXX. Hours: Monday to Saturday, 9:00 to 19:00.
  • Fix one spelling of your name in English and one in Arabic, and use them every time.
  • Write your phone number in one format, with +961, so it works for customers abroad too.
  • Choose one name for your area. If the town has two names (Jbeil and Byblos, Saida and Sidon), use the one on your sign and mention the other in your description.
  • When you move or change number, update every listing in the same week.

Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the single most visible listing you have: it is what appears on Google Maps and in the map results of Google Search. Our step by step guide on adding your business to Google Maps covers creation and verification. The checklist version:

  • Verified, with your name exactly as on your sign (no keywords, no area, no phone number in the name).
  • One main category that describes what you are, with as few extra categories as possible.
  • Address, phone, website and hours filled in and matching your master version.
  • A description, photos, and replies to reviews.
  • Only one profile per business. Remove or merge duplicates.

Write an address people can actually follow

Most streets in Lebanon have no building numbers, and people give directions by landmarks. That is fine, as long as your address is written in layers that go from wide to precise:

  1. Region and town: Beirut, Tripoli, Zahle, Kesrouan.
  2. Neighbourhood: Hamra, Achrafieh, Mina, Haret Saida.
  3. Street: the name locals actually use, even if it is not the official one.
  4. Building name and floor: “Nakhle Building, 2nd floor”.
  5. A landmark: “next to the pharmacy on the corner”, “facing the municipality”, “above the bank”.

Write the same address in Arabic and in English, so it reads naturally to each customer. Then make the map pin carry the rest: open satellite view, zoom in fully and place the pin on your entrance. For a shop inside a souk or a mall, the pin should be on the entrance customers use, not the centre of the complex.

Get listed where customers look

Beyond Google, customers find businesses through many other places. Each listing is another way in, and another confirmation that your details are real. Cover these:

  • Lebanon Local: a free page in English, Arabic and French with your map pin, hours, photos and description. Add your business.
  • Instagram and Facebook: address, hours and a WhatsApp link in the bio and page details. See our Instagram guide.
  • WhatsApp Business profile: address, hours, catalogue and a short description. See our WhatsApp Business guide.
  • Your trade association, municipality or chamber of commerce member list, if you belong to one.
  • The delivery apps you already work with, for restaurants and shops.

Use your master version every time. A few accurate listings are worth more than dozens of half-filled ones, and be wary of anyone who sells listings with a promise of top rankings.

Ask for reviews the right way

Reviews feed prominence, and they are often what decides between you and the shop down the road. Google's policy is clear on what is not allowed:

  • No incentives. Do not offer payment, discounts, free goods or free services in exchange for a review.
  • No review gating. Do not ask only your happy customers, and do not discourage negative reviews.
  • No quotas or scripts for staff. Google restricts asking staff to collect a set number of reviews or reviews with specific content.
  • Never buy reviews, and keep reviews to real customers, not yourself, your team or your family.

What is allowed, and works: ask every customer for an honest review. After a sale or an appointment, send your review link on WhatsApp with one line of thanks. Put a small QR code at the counter. Then reply to every review, in the language it was written in, within a few days. Google notes that replying shows you value customers' feedback.

A reply to a critical review
Thank you for telling us, and sorry the order was late on Saturday. We had a delivery problem that day and have since added a second driver. Please message us on WhatsApp next time and ask for Rita, we will make sure it arrives on time.

Website basics

You do not need a big website, but whatever you have should do these things:

  • A page title with your trade and your area, for example “Tailor in Achrafieh, Beirut | Atelier Nour” for a hypothetical tailor. The title is what shows as the blue link in Google.
  • Real text in Arabic and English (and French if your customers use it), not only images with words on them. Search engines read text, not pictures of text.
  • Your master name, address, phone and hours on the contact page, matching your Google profile, plus an embedded map.
  • Fast on mobile data. Many customers browse on their phone away from Wi-Fi, where data is slow or costly. Compress photos before uploading, avoid autoplay videos and test the site on your own phone with Wi-Fi turned off.
  • A WhatsApp button that opens a chat directly (see below).

Photos and hours that match reality

  • A clear photo of your front from the street, so people recognise it when they arrive. Our guide on shop photos with your phone shows how.
  • Inside, products and team photos, replaced with fresh ones each season.
  • Hours updated before public holidays, for Ramadan, for summer, and when power cuts or generator hours change when you open. Google Business Profile has special hours for these days, so your regular hours stay intact.
  • The same change made on Google, Instagram, WhatsApp and every directory, on the same day.

In Lebanon, most customers would rather message than call. A click-to-chat link opens a WhatsApp conversation with you in one tap. WhatsApp's format is https://wa.me/ followed by your full number in international format, with no plus sign, no leading zero, no spaces, brackets or dashes. You can add a prefilled message with ?text= followed by the URL-encoded text.

Turning a Lebanese number into a link
The number 03 XXX XXX becomes +961 3 XXX XXX in international format (drop the leading 0), and the link is https://wa.me/9613XXXXXX. A number like 71 XXX XXX becomes https://wa.me/96171XXXXXX.

Put this link on your website, in your Instagram bio, on your Facebook page, in your directory listings and on the QR code at your counter.
